Viadana lies in the far south-west of the province of Mantua, on the left bank of the Po, the longest river in Italy. The river and its broad floodplain define the southern side of the map. Tall embankments separate the town from the water, and between them lie wooded riverside strips and fields that flood when the Po rises.
The town itself sits on flat, open plain. Its historic centre forms a compact grid, while outlying villages and farms are spread across the countryside around it.
