Vijāpur lies in Mehsana district in northern Gujarat, on the flat plains between Ahmedabad and the hills of the north-east. From above, the town is a tight cluster of streets at the centre, surrounded by newer neighbourhoods and open farmland. Main roads lead out in several directions, linking it to villages and to the larger towns of the district.
The older part of Vijāpur has the dense, irregular lanes typical of historic Gujarati towns, with houses built close together and narrow streets winding between them. Outside this core the plan becomes looser and more regular. Wider roads and larger plots reflect more recent growth, and the fields begin where the built-up area thins out.
The Sabarmati River flows through the wider region to the east. The land around town is farmed, and its fields, tanks and village roads form a fine pattern.
