Villaflores is in the Frailesca region of Chiapas, a stretch of the state's central depression known for agriculture, especially maize. From above, the town is laid out in the rectilinear grid typical of Mexican towns. Straight streets run in two directions from a central plaza, and the blocks are fairly even until the grid starts to loosen at the edges.
Around the town, the land opens into cultivated plains and rolling ground, with the hills of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas rising further off. Roads leave Villaflores towards the nearby towns of the valley and towards Tuxtla Gutiérrez. On the map they cut through the field pattern in long, slightly curving lines.
