Vīrarāghavapuram lies on the western side of the Chennai metropolitan area in Tamil Nadu, where the city gradually meets the surrounding countryside. The land is flat and low, and on a map the area shows a mix of older settlement clusters, newer residential layouts in regular rows, and open plots still waiting to be built upon.
Like much of western Chennai, the landscape here is shaped by water. Traditional irrigation tanks, known locally as eris, are spread across the region, and they appear on maps as rounded open spaces between neighbourhoods.
