Viterbo Map Poster & Print
Viterbo, in northern Lazio, has one of the best-preserved medieval centres in central Italy. From above, the old city is held within a nearly complete circuit of walls and gates. Inside, streets form a dense, irregular web of narrow lanes and small squares, built largely from grey volcanic peperino stone.
In the thirteenth century Viterbo was a papal seat, and it is often called the City of the Popes. The Palazzo dei Papi hosted the long election of 1268 to 1271. Locals reportedly locked the cardinals in to hurry a decision, an episode linked to the origins of the conclave.
A Viterbo map poster shows the walled city in fine detail, including the tight San Pellegrino quarter. Outside the walls, roads run toward the Cimini hills and Lake Vico and pass the thermal springs that Dante mentioned.
