Vitrolles Map Poster & Print
Vitrolles sits on the eastern side of the Étang de Berre, the large saltwater lagoon north-west of Marseille. From above, the shoreline gives the map a long, soft edge. Behind it, the ground rises toward limestone ridges and the open scrub of the Arbois plateau, and the built-up area climbs up from the water with it.
The old village sits beneath a steep rock outcrop crowned by a watchtower, a small, dense cluster of lanes. Most of the town is much newer. It grew quickly from the late twentieth century onward, and that growth shows in curving residential loops, commercial zones and wide roads rather than an old grid. Motorways and the airport nearby add long, straight strokes.
A Vitrolles map poster shows a town in two layers: the small medieval core by the rock and the planned expansion that grew out from it toward the lagoon. In black and white, the contrast between the blank water, the tight lines of the village and the looping streets of the newer districts is easy to read.

A steep outcrop rises above the old village. On the map it shows up as a small knot of short, winding lanes squeezed between the rock and the newer roads.
Planned districts
Residential areas built in the later twentieth century form cul-de-sacs, loops and broad avenues, a pattern quite different from the old Provençal core.
