Voerde lies on the right bank of the Rhine in the Lower Rhine region of North Rhine-Westphalia, between Dinslaken and Wesel. On a map it is less a single town than a group of districts, each with its own small centre, linked by roads across flat, open land. The river runs along the western edge, broad and slow, with floodplain meadows beside it.
Friedrichsfeld, one of the town's districts, lies at the northern end, near the start of the Wesel–Datteln Canal. The canal and the Rhine together frame the area with long water lines, while railway tracks and roads run north to south through the middle.
A Voerde map poster captures the character of the Lower Rhine: level ground, wide skies, and settlements spaced out with fields and woodland between them. The composition is airy rather than dense, and the Rhine gives it a strong, curving edge.
