Vohipeno lies in southeastern Madagascar, in the Fitovinany region, near the Matitanana River as it approaches the Indian Ocean. On a map, the town is a modest settlement near the river, surrounded by rice paddies and lowland farms. The coastline is close to the east, and the land rises toward the island's interior uplands to the west.
The river is the key feature. It meanders across the coastal plain, splitting into channels and bordered by wetland fields. Roads follow the higher ground and link Vohipeno with Manakara to the north and other coastal towns. The street pattern itself is simple, with a few main routes and blocks of houses among cultivated land.
A Vohipeno map poster shows a place with a remarkable cultural history. It is the traditional heartland of the Antemoro people, whose scholars preserved sorabe, manuscripts of the Malagasy language written in Arabic script. That scholarly tradition is still associated with the Matitanana valley.
