Vormsi lies between the Estonian mainland and Hiiumaa and is the fourth largest island in the country. It is a short ferry ride from Rohuküla, near Haapsalu. For centuries it was home to a Swedish-speaking community, part of the coastal Estonian Swedes, and many place names still show that heritage. Today it has a small population and a quiet, rural character.
On a map the island is irregular and low. Its coast is full of shallow bays, small headlands and islets that make the outline intricate. Roads connect a handful of villages across forest, juniper meadows and wetlands, and the harbour sits on the southern shore facing the mainland. The surrounding sea is shallow, and land and water meet in a gentle, uneven line.
Hullo, near the middle of the island, is the main village, and its medieval stone church is one of the oldest buildings on Vormsi.
