Vreden lies in the far west of the Münsterland, just a few kilometres from the Dutch border. The map shows a compact historic core with a network of residential streets around it. Beyond, the flat, open land is typical of the region, with scattered farmsteads, straight field boundaries and small woods.
The Berkel River runs through town and continues west into the Netherlands, eventually reaching the IJssel at Zutphen. Vreden is one of the older towns of the western Münsterland, and its regional history, including cross-border life, is presented at the kult museum in the centre.
