Wacha is in the South West Ethiopia Peoples' Region, in the Kaffa area whose forests are widely associated with the origins of coffee. The country here is green, hilly and humid, and the town's map shows it. Streets follow the lie of the land, and the built-up area is small and bordered closely by vegetation.
Main roads pass through the centre, where shops and services gather, and residential lanes climb away from them onto the surrounding slopes. Streams run through the valleys nearby. Beyond the town, homesteads and garden plots mix with forest, so the transition from town to countryside is gradual.
