Waldbröl is a town in the Oberbergischer Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia, east of Cologne and Bonn, in the hilly, forested country of the Bergisches Land. As its name suggests, woodland is never far away. On a map, the town centre sits on higher ground, with roads leaving it along ridges and dropping into the surrounding valleys.
The centre is compact, with a main street and market area that form the densest part of the network. Beyond it, residential neighbourhoods spread out in irregular shapes that follow the terrain rather than a grid.
