Waldkraiburg is a young town in Upper Bavaria, close to the river Inn. It grew after the Second World War on the grounds of a former explosives works hidden in the forest, and was settled largely by people displaced from Central and Eastern Europe, many of whom set up businesses in the old factory buildings.
That origin is still visible from above. Instead of a medieval core, the town has a loose plan in which streets curve through what was once woodland, with pockets of trees between districts and industrial areas integrated into the structure rather than pushed to the edge.
A Waldkraiburg map poster captures this unusual shape: a town without a single centre, spread in soft curves across a forest clearing, with the edge of the woods forming a clear border.
