Wenxing lies in northern Hunan, in the flat, wet country where the Xiang River approaches Dongting Lake, one of China's largest freshwater lakes. From above, water is everywhere. Rivers and channels curve through the land, ponds and paddies fill the gaps, and the town's streets are laid out on the drier ground between them.
The landscape here has been shaped for centuries by floods and by the embankments built to hold them back. The lake's size changes a great deal with the seasons, and fishing and rice farming have long been the main ways of living from this land. Wenxing serves as the local administrative centre.
