Wermelskirchen sits in the Bergisches Land, the hilly, wooded region between Cologne, Wuppertal and Remscheid. The town centre lies on high ground. From there, streets run along ridges and down into narrow valleys, where small streams make their way toward larger rivers. On the map, the pattern looks irregular and organic, following the landscape rather than a grid.
The A1 motorway passes the town and cuts a smooth, strong line through the otherwise fine-grained network. Around the edges, villages and farms appear as small clusters separated by forest. The wider area is also known for its reservoirs, with the large Dhünn reservoir lying to the southwest.
