Wesseling lies on the left bank of the Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia, between Cologne to the north and Bonn to the south. On a map the river is the dominant feature, a wide band sweeping past the town's eastern edge. The settlement stretches along it, with residential streets set back from the water and larger industrial sites occupying long parcels near the bank.
The town is known for its chemical and petrochemical industry, including a large refinery complex, and those plants appear on the map as broad blocks with internal roads and rail sidings. Their scale contrasts with the fine grain of the residential neighbourhoods, which cluster around older village centres absorbed as the town grew.
