West Bloomfield Township lies in Oakland County, north-west of Detroit. From above, it has an unusually watery look for a suburb: dozens of lakes large and small are scattered across its area, and residential streets curve around them in loops and cul-de-sacs, all set within the straight section-line roads that divide much of Michigan into mile-wide squares.
Among the best-known lakes are Pine Lake, Orchard Lake and Walnut Lake, with the separate city of Orchard Lake Village sitting within the township's boundaries. A former rail line has been turned into the West Bloomfield Trail, a path for walking and cycling. The community is mainly residential, with wooded lots and wetlands between neighbourhoods.
