West Mifflin is a borough in Allegheny County, south-east of Pittsburgh, on the high ground above the Monongahela River. From above it looks the way many places in western Pennsylvania do: streets follow the ridges and hollows rather than a compass grid. Cul-de-sacs, winding roads and older straight blocks sit next to each other. Wooded ravines fall steeply toward the water.
Two features stand out on the map. Allegheny County Airport occupies a broad, flat stretch of the plateau, and its runways cut clean geometric lines through the surrounding housing. Kennywood, the amusement park that has entertained Pittsburgh families for more than a century and is listed as a National Historic Landmark, sits near the river side of the borough.
