Willebroek Map Poster & Print
Willebroek is a municipality in the province of Antwerp, Flanders, halfway between Brussels and Antwerp. The canal that runs through it is known locally as the Willebroek Canal, and more formally as the Brussels–Scheldt Maritime Canal. It is one of the oldest navigable canals in Belgium, dug in the sixteenth century, and it cuts straight through the town from south to north.
From above, the canal is the main feature: a long, wide, perfectly straight line. Streets and industrial sites line both banks, and bridges cross it at intervals. North of town it approaches the Rupel, and the land around it is flat, with fields, housing and old industrial plots packed close together.
Fort Breendonk, which lies within the municipality, served as a Nazi prison camp during the Second World War and is now a memorial. A Willebroek map poster shows the town's canal, its docks and bridges, and the neat Flemish streets that surround them.
