Winchester is the county seat of Clark County, Kentucky, east of Lexington, in the rolling Bluegrass region. From above, the old centre is a compact grid around the courthouse. Main roads leave it in several directions like spokes. Further out, residential streets turn into farmland, divided by fences and field boundaries, and Interstate 64 runs along the northern edge of town.
Winchester is known for two local products. It is widely credited as the birthplace of beer cheese, a spicy spread served across the region, and it is the home of Ale-8-One, a soft drink bottled there for about a century. On the map, the town is modest in size but clearly shaped: a dense core, radiating roads and open Bluegrass country around it.
