Wunstorf lies west of Hanover in Lower Saxony, on the flat land of the North German Plain. Its old centre grew around the Stiftskirche, a Romanesque collegiate church, and on the map the historic streets form a small, dense core, with newer residential areas and the railway station spread around them.
The municipality reaches north-west to the Steinhuder Meer, the largest lake in north-west Germany, and includes the lakeside town of Steinhude with its harbour and promenade. Near the town is the Wunstorf air base, whose long runway is one of the clearest shapes on the map; in 1948 and 1949 it served as a key base for the Berlin Airlift.
