Xinmiao is a town in the Chongqing municipality, set in the hilly country that defines this part of south-western China. Flat land is scarce, so the built-up area takes whatever level ground the valleys offer, and the streets rarely run straight for long. From above the town looks compact, drawn tightly into its setting, with roads threading out along the contours toward neighbouring villages.
Chongqing is known for its mountainous terrain and great rivers, and even its smaller towns carry that signature. Terraced fields, small reservoirs and narrow roads that double back on themselves are typical of the wider landscape.
