Yangtun lies in the far northwest of Jiangsu province, in the Xuzhou area, on the broad flat plain that stretches toward Shandong. The land here is almost level, and from above the settlement is framed by a regular mosaic of fields, drainage ditches and rural roads. Streets in the town follow the same orderly logic, laid out largely in straight lines on the open ground.
This part of northern Jiangsu is agricultural country with lakes and canals nearby. Water management has shaped the landscape as much as the towns have. Canals and field boundaries divide the land into rectangles, and villages sit along the roads that cross them. Yangtun is one of the market centres for this rural surrounding area.
