Yazman is a town in Bahawalpur District in the south of Punjab, Pakistan. It sits at an edge: to one side, land watered by the canal system of the Punjab plains, and to the other, the drier country leading into the Cholistan Desert. On a map this makes for a striking contrast between dense, gridded farmland and large, almost empty areas.
The town itself forms a compact cluster of streets and bazaars, with roads leading out toward Bahawalpur and the surrounding villages. Irrigation channels run in straight lines across the cultivated land, dividing it into regular fields. Further south the network of roads and channels fades, and the drawing becomes sparse.
