Yên Bái Map Poster & Print
Yên Bái follows the Red River as it flows southeast out of the northern mountains toward the delta. The town is long and narrow: its streets run along the river bank, pressed between the water and the hills that close in on either side. On a map it reads as a ribbon of urban blocks following the curve of the valley.
The name has a particular place in modern Vietnamese history. In February 1930 the Việt Nam Quốc Dân Đảng led the Yên Bái mutiny against French colonial rule from here. Southeast of the town lies Thác Bà Lake, a large reservoir whose flooded valleys and many islands form one of the region's most distinctive shorelines.
