Yongcheng is a town within the municipality of Chongqing, in the hilly country south of the main urban area. The terrain of this part of southwest China is rarely flat. Settlements tend to sit on valley floors or along ridges, and farmland climbs the slopes in terraces.
On a map, Yongcheng is a compact built-up area whose streets follow the lie of the land. Instead of forming a regular grid, they curve with the valleys and hillsides. Roads leave the town along the lowest routes available, and small streams and reservoirs dot the surrounding countryside.
