Yongle lies in the mountainous east of Chongqing Municipality, in the region where the Yangtze begins to cut through the Three Gorges. The land is steep, and the map shows it. Streets follow the contours in long, stacked curves, and roads switch back as they climb the hillsides. Flat land is scarce, so the town is compact and built wherever the slopes allow.
The Three Gorges Dam, far downstream, raised the level of the Yangtze through this region and reshaped the riverbanks. Many settlements were rebuilt on higher ground. Today the river is a broad, calm body of water between steep mountains, and towns like Yongle look down over it from terraces cut into the hillside.
A Yongle map poster shows a landscape set on a vertical scale. Streets run in bands, roads wind up the slopes, and the river fills the bottom of the valley. In Noir the winding lines stand out sharply against a dark ground, giving the mountains a strong graphic presence.
