Zemst Map Poster & Print
Zemst is a municipality in Flemish Brabant, on the flat corridor between Brussels and Mechelen. It is less a single town than a group of villages, including Elewijt, Eppegem, Weerde and Hofstade, each with its own church and centre. Elewijt is home to Het Steen, the country house Peter Paul Rubens bought late in life and painted in his landscapes.
From above, the strongest lines are the transport routes. The E19 motorway and the Brussels–Antwerp railway run north–south through the area, and the small river Zenne winds alongside them toward Mechelen. Between them, village cores appear as small knots of streets. Rows of houses along the older roads join them, with fields, meadows and patches of woodland all around.
A Zemst map poster shows how the Flemish countryside is actually arranged: scattered cores, long rows of roadside houses and green gaps in between, all crossed by major routes. In monochrome, the pattern looks almost like woven fabric, and people who know the area can pick out which knot of streets is their own village.
