Zonhoven lies just north of Hasselt in the Belgian province of Limburg, on the sandy soils of the Kempen. On the map it is less a single town than a centre with outlying hamlets, linked by roads that wander between woodland, heath and farmland. The built-up areas are loose and green, with gardens and tree cover filling much of the space between streets.
Water shapes the landscape more than the town's size suggests. Many ponds, some dug for fish farming over the centuries, lie in the wetter parts of the municipality, and small streams drain toward the Demer basin. Cycling fans know the name from the cyclocross races held in a deep sand pit near the centre, a course famous for its steep, sandy descent.
