Panghai sits in the hill country of eastern Guizhou, where settlements grow along whatever flat ground the valleys allow. On a map the built-up area looks compact and slightly irregular. Its roads follow the valley and the water, and the surrounding slopes stay blank, crossed only by a few winding lanes and field tracks.
This is a region of folded uplands and narrow basins, and the pattern shows clearly at poster scale. A single main road ties the town together, and smaller lanes branch off toward terraces and hamlets on the hillsides.
