Tula de Allende lies in the state of Hidalgo, north of Mexico City, along the Tula River. On a map the river runs through the city, with the historic centre on one side and neighbourhoods spreading across the surrounding hills. To the north, the archaeological zone of ancient Tula occupies an open area on high ground.
Tula was the capital of the Toltec civilisation, and its best-known monuments are the Atlantes, tall stone warrior figures standing on top of Pyramid B. In the city centre, the sixteenth-century Franciscan church, now the cathedral, has massive, fortress-like walls. The area is also home to a large oil refinery south of the city.
A Tula de Allende map poster combines these layers: the course of the river, the compact colonial grid of the centre, the irregular growth of newer districts and the open ground of the archaeological site. It is a map where history is visible in the shape of the land itself.
