Aībak Map Poster & Print

Aībak, also called Samangan, is the capital of Samangan Province in northern Afghanistan. The town lies in the valley of the Khulm River, surrounded by bare, rugged hills. The main road from Kabul to Mazar-i-Sharif follows the valley through the town. Streets and orchards gather on the valley floor, where the land is flat enough to farm.

Just outside the town is Takht-e Rostam, a Buddhist monastery and stupa carved directly into the rock, probably in the fourth or fifth century. The stupa sits in a deep trench cut out of a hill, and nearby caves served as the monks' living quarters. It's a reminder that this valley was once on important routes across Central Asia.

The Aībak map poster is shaped by the narrow valley. The main road forms a strong line through the centre, streets and fields line the river, and the empty hills press in on both sides. It's a spare, focused composition with a clear sense of landscape.

01

Khulm River valley

The river runs through the valley alongside the town. The fields and orchards on its banks form a green strip that shows on the map as fine field boundaries.

02

North–south highway

The main road between Kabul and Mazar-i-Sharif runs through the town. It forms the strongest line on the poster and gives it a clear direction.

03

Surrounding hills

Bare hills close in on both sides of the valley. They leave wide, empty areas around the town, which gives the print its spare, open look.
