Aix-en-Provence began in 122 BC as Aquae Sextiae, a Roman settlement built around warm springs, and the old town still keeps the compact outline of its former walls. On a map that outline is unmistakable. A dense tangle of narrow medieval streets sits inside a continuous ring of boulevards, and newer districts and hillside villas spread out beyond it toward the Provençal countryside.
Along the southern edge of the old town runs the Cours Mirabeau, a broad, straight avenue shaded by plane trees and dotted with fountains. On a map it reads as a clean bar across the curving street pattern. Aix is often called the city of a thousand fountains, and the squares where they stand appear as small openings in the tight fabric of the centre.
Paul Cézanne was born and worked here, painting the limestone mass of Montagne Sainte-Victoire, east of the town, again and again. An Aix-en-Provence map poster brings together the ringed historic core and the Quartier Mazarin, with its seventeenth-century grid south of the Cours. It also takes in the university quarters and the roads that lead out toward the landscape he made famous.
The city's grand avenue runs in a straight line along the old town's southern edge, lined with plane trees and fountains. It is the most recognisable single stroke on the map.
A near-continuous loop of boulevards follows the line of the former ramparts. It sharply separates the dense medieval centre from the looser, greener districts that grew around it.
This district of straight, perpendicular streets was laid out south of the Cours in the seventeenth century. It stands out as a small, orderly grid beside the winding lanes of the older town.

Cur Aix-en-Provence
Aix is where many people study, marry or spend a formative summer, and its old town is small enough to know by heart. A poster of it recalls a particular café, fountain or daily walk, framed by the boulevards that hold the whole centre together.
You can set the title, subtitle and coordinates line yourself, adding a date, a name or a line in French or Provençal. Choose among Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Sand and Paper sit especially well with the warm stone of Provence.
