Alfama Map Poster & Print

Alfama is Lisbon's oldest district, and on a map it looks nothing like the ordered Baixa just to the west. Its streets wind down the steep slope between the Castelo de São Jorge and the Tagus, breaking into stairways, dead ends and tiny squares. Much of this medieval layout survived the 1755 earthquake that destroyed large parts of the city.

The Sé cathedral stands on its western edge, and the churches of São Vicente de Fora and the white dome of the National Pantheon rise to the east. Tram 28 winds through its upper streets, and viewpoints such as Miradouro de Santa Luzia look out over the rooftops to the river. Alfama is closely associated with fado.

An Alfama map poster is dense and hand-drawn in character. The lanes run in every direction, following the hill rather than any plan, and the broad edge of the Tagus below gives the tangled pattern a calm, open base.

01

Castle hill

The castle walls crown the high ground on the northern side. From there, streets and stairways fall toward the river in a pattern shaped entirely by the slope.

02

Medieval lanes

Narrow, crooked alleys and stepped passages form the heart of the district, one of the few parts of Lisbon where the pre-1755 street pattern largely survives.

03

Tagus waterfront

The wide river runs along the southern edge. On the poster it becomes a large, quiet area of water beneath the densely drawn streets.

Cur Alfama

Tabula quae aliquid significat

Alfama is where many people fall for Lisbon: an evening of fado, a view from a miradouro, a climb that never quite leads where expected. The map records the maze exactly, which makes it a good keepsake of getting lost there.

Set a title, subtitle and coordinates line of your own, then choose from five styles. Paper and Sand echo the old stone and tile, while Noir gives the dense lanes a nocturnal feel.
