Aswān Map Poster & Print

Aswan sits on the east bank of the Nile in southern Egypt, at the site of the First Cataract, where the river passes between granite rocks and islands. From above, the city is a narrow strip between the river and the desert. The Corniche follows the bank, and the west bank rises into sand dunes with the Tombs of the Nobles carved into the cliffs.

The river here is full of islands. Elephantine Island has ancient ruins and Nubian villages, and Kitchener's Island is home to a botanical garden. South of the city, the Aswan High Dam holds back Lake Nasser, one of the world's largest artificial lakes. The temple of Philae was moved to Agilkia Island to save it from rising water.

A Aswan map poster shows a place where the geography is unusually clear. The river runs through the centre with scattered islands, the city follows the east bank in a thin line, and the desert presses in from both sides. The contrast between water, rock and sand gives the composition a strong, open form.

Cur Aswān

Tabula quae aliquid significat

Aswan is often hung by travellers who sailed the Nile there and by families with Nubian roots. The islands and the river make it one of Egypt's most recognisable city shapes.

Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line with the dates of a trip or a family name. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
