Bad Dürkheim sits where the wooded hills of the Palatinate Forest meet the flat Rhine plain, along the German Wine Route. On a map the town has an unmistakable edge: to the west the streets give way to forest and steep valleys, while to the east vineyards cover the land in long parallel strips. The historic centre is compact, with the spa park and main streets at its core and newer neighbourhoods spreading into the vines.
The town is known for its Wurstmarkt, a wine festival held every September that it describes as one of the largest in the world, and for the Dürkheimer Riesenfass, a giant barrel that holds a restaurant. On the hill above town stand the ruins of Limburg Abbey. The long timber graduation tower in the spa park, once used for salt production, is a reminder of the town's history as a salt spa.
