Bārākpur stretches along the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, about twenty-five kilometres north of central Kolkata. From above it combines two very different patterns: the dense, irregular streets of the town and the wide, green spaces of the old cantonment beside the river. The Barrackpore Trunk Road, one of the region's historic arteries, runs south through it toward the city.
The town grew around the first British military cantonment in Bengal, established in the eighteenth century, and it played a part in the events of 1857, when the sepoy Mangal Pandey confronted his officers here. The riverside also holds Gandhi Ghat, a memorial where some of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were immersed, and parkland facing Serampore on the opposite bank.
