Barão de Grajaú lies on the western bank of the Parnaíba, the river that divides Maranhão from Piauí. The city of Floriano stands directly across the water, and a road bridge links the two. On a map the town therefore reads as one half of a pair, joined over a wide, slow-moving river.
The town itself is modest. A grid of streets presses against the riverbank, a few main roads lead inland, and then comes the open scrub and farmland typical of the interior of the Northeast. The name honours a nobleman of the Brazilian empire, a reminder of the period when the river was an important route through the region.
A Barão de Grajaú map poster puts the Parnaíba at the centre and lets the town and its neighbour sit on either side. The river becomes the main shape, the bridge a single decisive line, and the streets on the Maranhão bank a tight, regular block. It is a simple composition, and that simplicity suits the place well.

The bridge to Floriano
A single crossing links Barão de Grajaú to Floriano in Piauí and draws a short, clear line between the two street grids across the water.
Riverside grid
The town's streets line up close to the bank in a compact, regular pattern before thinning into roads that head west into the interior.
