Batley Map Poster & Print

Batley is a town in West Yorkshire, part of the borough of Kirklees and of the area long known as the Heavy Woollen District. Its map reflects a hilly setting: terraced streets climb and curve along the slopes, and the older centre sits in the valley where roads and railway meet.

In the nineteenth century Batley became a centre of the shoddy and mungo trade, recycling woollen rags into new cloth, and the town's mill buildings and warehouses shaped its streets. The grand commercial buildings of that era still give the centre a distinctive character.

Around the town the built-up area merges with neighbouring Dewsbury, Birstall and the villages on the hills, while pockets of green and open moorland edges appear at the margins. A Batley map poster shows the dense, textured street pattern of an industrial Pennine town, drawn around its valley.

01

Terraced slopes

Rows of terraced houses follow the contours of the valley sides, producing long parallel lines that bend with the hills.

02

Mill-town centre

The centre, shaped by the wool trade, sits low in the valley where main roads and the railway converge among larger mill-era blocks.

03

Joined neighbours

The town runs almost seamlessly into Dewsbury, Birstall and surrounding villages, so the map shows a continuous industrial valley rather than an isolated town.
