Behshahr Map Poster & Print

Behshahr is in the east of Mazandaran province, where the green slopes of the Alborz mountains meet the coastal plain along the Caspian Sea. From above the town stretches in a band along the foot of the hills. Streets climb gently to the south, and flat farmland runs north toward Gorgan Bay and the long Miankaleh peninsula.

The town was once called Ashraf, and it was developed in the early seventeenth century by Shah Abbas I as a royal retreat. Traces of that time remain. The Abbas Abad garden, a Safavid complex with a lake among forested hills south of town, is one of the Persian gardens on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The meeting of mountain and plain gives the Behshahr map poster a clear sense of direction. The streets are denser and more tightly packed near the hills and open out toward the lowlands. The coastal road, with the water beyond it, runs across the northern part of the frame.

Alborz foothills

Forested slopes rise straight from the southern edge of town. On the poster, the street pattern stops against this higher ground.

02

Coastal plain

North of town, flat farmland stretches toward the Caspian shore. Straight field roads and irrigation channels give this area a loose grid.

03

Gorgan Bay

The shallow bay and the Miankaleh peninsula lie to the north. The long, narrow spit and calm water add a distinctive shape near the coast.
