Chatham sits on the south bank of the River Medway in Kent, where the tidal river swings north toward the Thames estuary. From above, the town reads as a tight valley centre hemmed in by chalk slopes, with long terraces running up the hillsides and the wide water always close. Rochester lies upstream and Gillingham merges to the east, so the street pattern flows across borders without a clear edge.
The defining shape is the former Royal Navy dockyard along the river's northern reach. Its slipways, covered building sheds and rectangular basins show up as hard geometric lines against the curving shore, and the regenerated Chatham Maritime and St Mary's Island extend that order onto reclaimed land. Ships of the line were built here for centuries, including HMS Victory, launched in 1765.
Above the dockyard, the open ground of the Great Lines and the earthworks of Fort Amherst leave a green gap in the drawing, a reminder that the yard was defended from the landward side. Charles Dickens spent part of his childhood in Chatham, and the town appears in his writing. A Chatham map poster captures that balance of river, industry and hill in clean black line.
The long rectangle of the old naval yard, with its slipways and basins, sits on the river edge as the most ordered shape on the map, now preserved as a museum and working estate.
The tidal Medway loops past Rochester and Chatham before widening toward the estuary, giving the poster a broad curve of open water and a ragged line of marshy shore to the north.
A band of open grassland and old fortifications between Chatham and Gillingham shows as a quiet space of paths among dense housing, framing the dockyard from the ridge above.

Cur Chatham
For people with family ties to the dockyard, Royal Navy service or the Medway Towns, this map holds a lot of memory in a small frame. The river and basins make a strong composition in any of the five styles, especially Noir or Blueprint, where the water becomes a solid dark shape.
You can set your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, adding a street name, a launch date or a wedding year. The digital download costs $9 and includes six print sizes as 300 DPI PNG and PDF files, or you can order a matte print with an optional wooden frame.
