Medieval grid
The old town streets cross at right angles in a remarkably regular pattern. This planned layout reads on the map like a carefully drawn chessboard.

Chełmno stands on a high escarpment above the Vistula valley in northern Poland, and its old town is one of the best-preserved medieval layouts in the country. The town was founded under the Teutonic Order and gave its name to Chełmno law, a town charter of 1233 that became a model for many settlements across the region.
From above, the old town is almost a textbook grid: straight streets meeting at right angles, a large market square at the centre with the Renaissance town hall, and blocks packed tightly within a ring of defensive walls. Much of that wall survives, along with several Gothic churches, and the edge of the plateau drops sharply toward the river plain.
Chełmno is often called the city of lovers, because relics associated with Saint Valentine are kept in its parish church. A Chełmno map poster gives that reputation a quieter form: the precise grid, the circuit of walls and the escarpment above the Vistula, all rendered in fine black lines on a clean sheet.

Market square
At the centre, a wide square holds the Renaissance town hall, forming an open rectangle that anchors the entire street plan.
Walls and escarpment
Surviving defensive walls trace the old town's outline, while the steep edge of the plateau falls away toward the Vistula floodplain and gives the map a strong natural border.
