Chertsey Map Poster & Print

Chertsey sits on the south bank of the Thames in Surrey, where the river loops through flat, low land. From above, the old town centre is a compact cluster of streets around Guildford Street and Windsor Street. The river, its meadows and the bridge define the eastern side, while the M25 runs close to the west.

The town grew around Chertsey Abbey, founded in the seventh century and once one of the most important Benedictine houses in England. Little of it survives above ground, but its site remains part of the town. The eighteenth-century Chertsey Bridge still carries traffic across the Thames.

On the map, the curve of the river, the open meadows and the tighter historic streets make a balanced composition. A Chertsey map poster also picks up the lakes created by old gravel workings in the area, which give the surrounding landscape its distinctive pattern of water.

Thames and Chertsey Bridge

The river bends past the town and is crossed by an eighteenth-century stone bridge. On the poster it forms a smooth line along one side of the town.

02

Chertsey Meads

Wide, open meadows lie along the riverbank. They give the map a large area of calm space next to the built-up streets.

03

Historic centre

The older town is a compact knot of streets near the abbey site. It is noticeably denser and more irregular than the later housing around it.
