Chester lies on the west bank of the Delaware River, just southwest of Philadelphia. It is the oldest city in Pennsylvania. Swedish colonists settled here as Upland, and William Penn renamed the town when he arrived in 1682. From above, the city is a set of grids laid at slightly different angles. They meet along Chester Creek, which winds south through the middle of town to the Delaware.
The waterfront is broad and mostly industrial. Its long piers and large lots stand in contrast to the tight rows of houses further inland. Interstate 95 runs parallel to the river and draws a strong diagonal band across the whole city. Near the water, the Commodore Barry Bridge rises toward New Jersey. It is one of the longest cantilever bridges in the United States, and it is easy to find on any map.
A Chester map poster brings these layers together: the river edge, the creek valley, the highway and the street grids that were fitted around them. Subaru Park, home of the Philadelphia Union soccer team, stands on the riverfront near the bridge. Widener University's campus sits in the north of the city. Both show up as open shapes among the dense blocks.
This cantilever bridge crosses the Delaware to Bridgeport, New Jersey. On the map it is a long straight line leaving the riverbank, and it anchors the eastern edge of the city.
The creek bends through the centre of the city on its way to the Delaware. The street grids on each side meet it at different angles, a trace of how the town grew around the water.
Wide industrial parcels, piers and the stadium line the Delaware. Their large, simple shapes contrast with the fine residential blocks just inland, across the rail line and I-95.

Cur Chester
Chester means something to people who studied at Widener, follow the Union or have family ties to one of the oldest towns in the Delaware Valley. The river, the creek and the bridge give the map a clear, recognisable outline.
Add your own title and subtitle, and set the coordinates line to a street corner, a stadium seat or a first home. Then choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
