Tabula
Chorley sits where the West Pennine Moors fall away toward the Lancashire plain, and a map shows that meeting point clearly. The town centre is a compact cluster of streets around a long, straight high street, with terraced rows running off it in tight parallel lines. Beyond them, newer estates spread in looser curves, and the motorway corridor passes close enough to frame the western edge.
The largest green shape near the centre is Astley Park, a broad wooded estate with Astley Hall at its heart and a small river winding through its grounds. To the east, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal traces its patient contour line past the town. Chorley is also known as the birthplace of Henry Tate, the sugar merchant whose collection founded the Tate gallery, and it gives its name to the Chorley cake.
A Chorley map poster reduces all of this to line and space: the dense Victorian core, the soft edges of the park, the canal and motorway drawn as long confident strokes. In black and white, the town reads as a place shaped by market trade, mills and railways, with the open moorland always just beyond the frame.
A large wooded estate just west of the town centre, its paths, lawns and small river forming the most distinctive open space on the Chorley map.
Rows of Victorian terraces run in close parallel lines around the centre, giving the older districts a fine, regular texture that prints especially well at larger sizes.
The Leeds and Liverpool Canal follows the land's contours to the east, while the motorway corridor cuts a straighter line to the west, framing the town between them.
