Dimitrovgrad sits on the left bank of the Volga basin in Ulyanovsk Oblast, where the Bolshoy Cheremshan River meets the wide backwater of the Kuybyshev Reservoir. From above, the town reads as two separate pieces. The older core is a compact grid of merchant-era blocks, and a newer planned district spreads out across the water, joined to it by long road embankments.
Until 1972 the town was called Melekess. It was renamed after the Bulgarian politician Georgi Dimitrov, and in the same period it became home to a major research institute for nuclear reactors. That scientific role shaped the newer district: wide avenues, broad housing blocks and industrial sites that appear on the map as large rectangles set back from the shoreline.
A Dimitrovgrad map poster shows how much of the town's outline is set by water. The reservoir makes a soft, irregular edge, the river channels bend through low ground, and the rail line cuts a firm diagonal between them. With labels removed, the pattern becomes a study of two grids arranged around a lake that did not exist a century ago.
The flooded Volga backwater forms a broad, irregular edge to the east, softening the town's outline and filling the frame with open, calm space.
The old Melekess grid and the later planned district sit apart as distinct street patterns, giving the map two clear centres of gravity.
Long causeways and bridges span the river mouth, drawing firm straight lines across the water to join the two halves of the town.

Cur Dimitrovgrad
For people from Dimitrovgrad, or anyone who has worked in its research community, the map holds the town's odd double shape in a single frame. It suits a hallway or study, and it gives the lines of home a quiet place on the wall.
You can set your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, such as a street, a year or the old name Melekess. Then choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the town's engineering side especially well.
