Folkestone sits on the Kent coast at the narrowest part of the English Channel. From above, its shape follows the land: the grand terraces of the West End line the top of the cliff along the Leas, while the old town runs steeply down to a small harbour. To the east, the ground rises again toward the chalk of the Warren and the cliffs beyond.
The harbour arm pushes out into the sea as a long, curved line, one of the clearest features on the map. Behind it, the Old High Street and the Creative Quarter form a tight network of narrow streets, while the Victorian suburbs spread inland in wider, more regular blocks. The Channel Tunnel terminal lies just outside the town at Cheriton, a huge spread of tracks.
Folkestone was a fashionable Victorian resort and a busy cross-Channel port. More recently, it is known for its art triennial and restored harbour. Harbour arm
The old railway pier curves out from the harbour into the Channel. Its long, thin line is the most distinctive shape on the Folkestone coast.

A steep, narrow street runs from the town centre down to the harbour. The surrounding lanes form the densest, oldest part of the map.
