Tabula
Fredericia was founded in 1650 by King Frederick III as a fortified town guarding the crossing between Jutland and Funen. Its planners laid it out on a regular grid of straight streets, and much of the ring of earthen ramparts that enclosed it still survives as a green belt. From above, the result is unusually clear: a geometric old town, a zig-zag line of fortifications, and the open water of the Little Belt beside it.
The town is remembered in Denmark for the Battle of Fredericia in 1849, when Danish troops broke a siege during the First Schleswig War; the Landsoldaten statue commemorates it. Today Fredericia is a major port and rail junction, and industrial harbour areas stretch along the shore. A Fredericia map poster shows the fortress plan at the centre and the working waterfront around it.
North of the town, the Little Belt narrows toward the bridges that link Jutland and Funen, drawing long straight lines across the water. Newer neighbourhoods spread west and north beyond the ramparts, their curving streets contrasting sharply with the rigid old grid. Few Danish towns show their origins as clearly on a map.
A long line of green earthworks, with angled bastions, still wraps around the old town and forms the poster's most distinctive shape.
Inside the ramparts, straight parallel streets cross at right angles, showing the seventeenth-century plan almost unchanged.
The strait along the town's shore provides a broad water edge, with bridges to Funen crossing it further north.
