Gaoyou Map Poster & Print

Gaoyou lies in central Jiangsu, north of Yangzhou, between the Grand Canal and Gaoyou Lake, one of the larger freshwater lakes in eastern China. On a map the lake spreads across the west as a huge, calm shape. The canal runs north to south along its eastern shore, and the town grows eastward from the canal banks across flat, well-watered land.

The town's long connection with the canal is reflected in the Yucheng Post Station, a well-preserved Ming dynasty relay station for the imperial postal service. Gaoyou is also known across China for its salted duck eggs, a product of the lakes and wetlands around it. The Song poet Qin Guan was born here.

A Gaoyou map poster shows a town defined by water. The canal forms a hard, straight line, the lake an expansive open field, and the town between them fills with streets, smaller waterways and farmland beyond. The result is spare and horizontal, an image of the low-lying Jiangsu plain.

Grand Canal

The historic canal runs north to south past the town. Its long, straight course separates the built-up area from the lake to the west.

02

Gaoyou Lake

The broad lake fills the western part of the map as open water, a large empty field that balances the dense streets in the east.

03

Old post station

The Ming-era Yucheng Post Station stands near the canal and recalls the imperial courier network that once ran along this waterway.

Tabula quae aliquid significat

For people with family ties to Jiangsu, or anyone drawn to the history of the Grand Canal, this map has a calm, horizontal beauty. The line where lake meets canal gives it an unusually strong structure.

Personalise the title, add a subtitle such as a year or a family name, and set the coordinates. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the engineered look of the canal.
