Geleen Map Poster & Print
Geleen lies in the south of Dutch Limburg, close to the Maas and the Belgian border, and is part of the municipality of Sittard-Geleen. From above, the town is made up of several older village cores that grew together, with residential neighbourhoods and green belts between them and the valley of the Geleenbeek running through. To the west, the Chemelot industrial site covers a very large area.
Geleen's modern form dates from the twentieth century, when the Dutch state mines opened the Maurits colliery here and the population grew rapidly. When mining ended, the chemical works that had grown up alongside it became the core of Chemelot, which remains one of the largest industrial sites in the Netherlands.
A Geleen map poster shows the town's layered history in plan. It shows the irregular streets of old village centres, the curving roads of post-war neighbourhoods and the large regular blocks of the industrial site. The Geleenbeek adds a gentle curve, and green spaces between districts keep the composition open and balanced.

Village cores
Older centres that once stood apart are still visible in the street pattern as small knots of irregular streets within the town.
Geleenbeek valley
The stream winds through the town with a green corridor along its banks and adds a soft line among the residential streets.
